Well, you know the saying.

nitrate bottle.jpg

that is the picture of a nitrate bottle, through the tank, the long way. 30 some inches and I can read the lot number and instructions. I have never had water this clear. I do believe this all the result of my DIY cannister filter. It would be clearer if the crushed coral was before the stuffing. Oh well.

Got pics or a build of your canister?

yup congrats

well in any case, it did exactly what I wanted it to do :) Add to the fact that I am not losing much (if any) CO2 to surface agitation, no dead spots in the tank (troublesome in long tanks without powerheads) and little fish waste on the bottom. That last one I think is because the cories keep kicking up junk and is being sucked up by the filter.

prob just from more water being filtered with more media.

What's happened is all the organic junk that was in the water strata is now sitting in a cannister filter, but has a strong water current over it so it decays faster and actually leeches more bad things into the water than the stuff you filtered. However, it's clearer, so it's healthier, right?

At the least, remove and clean the mechanical filter media as much as possible.

again, we are talking FW, not SW, in a PLANTED TANK. Perhaps decaying organics is EXACTLY what I want, more ferts for the plants.

It is becoming obvious that you don't know that much about a FW setup, so please stop trying to lecture everyone on what you think is right, I don't try to lecture Reefers on FW principles (because I have not done enough research nor do I have a reef), neither should you.
