A rocky question...

Found this huge rock in my father-in-laws garden and it crumbled when i dropped it. Can anyone help identify it?

It's quite brittle and very soft in the center - could it be safe for aquarium use?
 
If it falls apart that easily, I would assume that water will do some major breakdown on it and it would then be in your water column. I would not use these rocks. Try finding them in a river or lake if you have any close to you.
 
unless you have cichlids from the great rift lakes I wouldn't put them in your tank.
 
Looks like granite to me
 
i wouldnt put that in your tank even if you were planning on having africans. if it is soft in the middle, water could be already seeping through... it looks almost as if there are already water stains. the water in the tank will be constantly beating this rock, and if it is porous water will easily move through and dissolve it, which would cause a spike in hardness and pH

Since pic's rarely are able to pull the finer visible thing's out we may not see, you might try iding it yourself w/ ( http://www.rockhounds.com/rockshop/rockkey/index.html#schist ) just follow the questionaire @ towards the bttm. Good site in gen. to have for future to be safe w/ anything going in w/ livestock. Would be cool if you did id it & let us know, what you found:)
 
Interesting thought... if I dump the rocks in a bucket of resin and give them a really good coating, it...

1. Should stop them disintegrating further
2. Should stop anything leaching into the tank water
3. Should bring out the deep natural colors
