I recently diagnosed camullanus worms in two of my tanks. For those of you who don't know what that is they are tiny, skinny worms that hang from the infected fishes anus, they turn red from being attached to the fish's intestines. So I began to research the treatment for such an ailment and it is very complicated. I followed directions to a T for treatment with Fenbenzadole(panacur) 2 days into the treatment I found very conflicting information about this medicine so I began to remove all traces of the medicine from the tanks.
Side note:
My sick tank #1 contained 6 discus. I lost one the first day but he was sick and had not been eating for a few days.
Day three- after multiple water changes all traces were removed but the side effects that I read about had started(fins begin to dissolve, heavy mucus, fish lay on the bottom, tail stand/head stand)
I decided now it was more necessary to get the fish back to health then to kill the worms. I added melafix, Aquarium salt and raised the temp.
Here is where things turn bad. The heater in my discus tank overheated and when I woke up it was 96.6° and 15 of 30 neons were dead and so was one more discus. 2 of the 4 remaining discus are eating but still have very little control of themselves.
Tank#2
This is the tank most infected by the camallanus. I lost one Apistogramma cacatuoides(gold) and my blue rams all just sit in one spot with their fins rotting off, my rummy nose tetras have lost most of their nose color but good news is it looks like the really infected apistos are expelling dead worms.
Its not over yet, There could still be eggs or some fish might not be able to pass the dead worms or even some not killed.
I would love advice from those who have treated Camallanus successfully and even some advice to get my fish feeling better from there new issues.

I have discontinued all dosing and co2 as well as light for the time I've been treating the fish and the addition of salt has begun to kill my beautiful plants too.

Sorry, can't offer much else for you as I have never had to deal with it. Have you searched on here for other threads about it?

Please keep us updated for future reference for others.

As of this morning I lost another discus, down to three. The best advice so far has been in a sticky on the SimplyDiscus.com forum.

I've very sorry to hear of your problems. Even sorrier to say I remember reading about someone who had a similar problem with their fish and worms and the outcome was not good. And I'm sorrier still that I have no advice to give as I've never had this problem.
