About Blyxa japonica and runners...

It does look like dwarf sag.
I'll have to look into mineralised soil (to be honest, not sure what it is).
I've used composted manure and potting mix topped with sand in another tank, and that seems to work fine, although I've run that as a low-light tank, so plant growth has been fairly modest.
The idea in this tank - which has been running for 2 or 3 years - was to kind of 'reto-fit' the manure base into the current substrate in specific spots to minimise disrupting the scape and the fish. Kind of DIY root tabs.

Don't let the making of the soil discourage you. It's really not that much work. I have done it for a 120g, 75g, two 29g's, two 20g longs and two 10g's. For the smaller tanks, I boil the soil. For the 120g, 75g and two 29g's, I baked the soil in the sun several times. The process I follow is found below:

I boiled the soil for the smaller tanks after reading a bit about it from Tom Barr. Both processes work fine for the soil. I add all the ingredients as outlined in the article (dolomite and muriate of potash and clay).

Just thought I'd share. :)

It looks like its much larger than dwarf sag. I have some Echinodorus Quadricostatus and it looks a lot like what you have in the pic. Google it and see if it's what you got as well. This plant sends runners like crazy and you need to have real bad luck if it doesn't do so.

Thanks londonloco, that's interesting and I will consider this method with my next tank.

sepehr, I don't know - when I google E. quadricostatus, most of the photos show a leaf that starts off as a narrow stem, then broaden out quite a lot before narrowing back to a point; whereas photos of dwarf sag show more of a gradual broadening and tapering along the whole leaf, which is what my plants do.

Thanks sepehr - I'll take your word for it that the plants in those photos are correctly IDed; when I googled Echinodorus quadricostatus I got this plant, but others as well. That does look like what I have, and certainly the runners are very similar, which was the subject of my original question.
