I'm running an Emperor 280 on my 30g. My question when my filter is cloged Water starts to flow back into the taak from the inlet side of the filter. When I take the OLD filter out and put a new Emperor filter in will the make my tank have a mni cycle? Or since their is a bio wheel it's not much of a problem?

On a side note anybody else who uses this type filter do you alway use the Emperor Filter? They are starting to get costly for me, was wondering if their is any type of other filter that could be used with the Emperor?

I used to use an emporer and I did use their replacement filters. I didn't replace my filter as often as they suggested but instead I just rinsed it out alot and only replaced them when I just had to (meaning they were falling apart or getting all clogged up with gunk and I couldn't get the gunk out).

I have a 280 on my 20H. I don't change the filter cartridge. I rinse it out well in the tank water that I have drained for a partial water change and put it back in. It is still good for filtering particulate and holds some of the biological filter benefit with the bacteria that have attached themselves to the filter surfaces. The carbon in the filter was exhausted after the first week or 2 so I don't worry about it. I also use the little basket they include to hold more filter floss but the choice of what to use in that is up to each person and their needs. That is why they have the empty media holder.

I have a 280 in all three of my tanks. It does get expensive to replace the filters. I have two carbon filters in each one. I change one of the two every month. So i use three of those replacement filters a month. they are 9.99 for two at my petsmart.

I have never used the other Media thing that came with the filter. Should I be using it in my tank though?

I'm getting rdy to upgrade to a 75g so maybe I should use the midia thing and cut up some filter to get some bactira on in order to start the 75g out good. What you all think?

Gosh, thats seriously expensive. I just pop the little filter cage open and stuff it with new filter floss whenever it gets clogged.

If it has been up and running for a while the bio-wheel should take care of the needed bugs to keep a healthy cycle.
For mine I bought an additional gray media container and filled it with poly-fill from Wal-mart (about 5.00 per bag). Worked great and very cheap.

So I guess the Bio-wheel has MOST of the bactira needed in order to keep the tank running smoothly then? So changing the filter out wont cause my tank to go into a mini cycle as long as the bio-wheel DON'T dry out, right?

The reason i keep two charcoal filters in there is because i can change one at a time so i dont risk going through another cycle
