? about Naso Lituratus

OK, I have a question about the Naso I can't seem to find an answer to any where. I've seen a couple of these fish with peduncle spines that stick out, but most of the ones I see don't have this. Is this something that occurs in all fish, but is removed for some reason?? Or, is it a geographic differance withen the species?? I've only seen one Naso at a LFS with these large spines present, all others just have two nubs on the caudal peduncle. TIA for any enlightenment ....

Hmm...don't know of any geographic differences with the caudal spines on naso tangs, but I haven't explicitly looked either. They can be erected and retracted at will by the tang as a sign of dominance/aggression, so maybe the one that you saw at the store was just pissed off.
