i'm so frusterated right now!! my red eyed tetras just appeared with a fungus 2 weeks ago out of no where. no reason they should have got it, haven't done anything different and they didn't have any other injuries. my one bala sharks mouth is all bloody and red and swollen for about 2 weeks now but seems to be staying alive still. doesn't even look like a mouth. once again, never did anything different. my betta seems to be going down hill...don't know if its old age but hes not doing so well. ugh, this is just so frusterating! i haven't done anything different at all. i do my weekly water changes all the time. params. are all still how they've always been and i don't have a qt tank to put the sick fish in and even if i did i don't know how to treat them?...this is just getting ridiculous:wall: could someone help me with these problems.....please?? how do i treat them considering theres other healthy fish in the tanks and theres corys in the one tank??

anti biotics

when there are visible leasions you may have a bacterial infection.

there is a thread where there is mention of columnaris. which is treated a number of ways.

antibiotics is one...maracyn and maracyn2 are useful .

you will need to watch the water parameters as you can destroy the beneficial bacteria.

I still get frustrated once in awhile. I decided to try a planted tank.....you think you are frustrated! wow, what a different world. My problem is that I started with a 130G tank! oops. I should've started with a smaller tank at first cause the cost of newbie mistakes in such a large tank is tremendous. I almost threw in the towel countless times. Anyways, what I always tell myself is,"If everything is absolutely perfect and all you did was feed your fish everyday, wouldn't that be just a bit boring!" Think of it as a challenge and a learning experience and by going through it you will be all that much more advanced in the aquarium hobby. You will be able to help others through posts like this one.

Good luck and don't give up, your fishies will love you for it!

Don't quit the hobby. Worst case scenario is to just dismantle the tank with the sick fish and start over. If you have the space for it, try getting a 10 gallon tank for quarantine, it will save you a lot grief.

yeah i defintiely support the quarantine idea.

if it makes you feel any better.. last night i sucked the eye out of a goldfish bred to have no dorsal fin and a fused tail fin who had his left pectoral fin eaten off when he was a baby. i'm not giving up on him until he does. i made that promise when i bought him.

That's one heck of a pity purchase there. Wow. Good luck with the goldie.

I agree, don't give up. I don't have a QT tank either and have made some mistakes along the way. I killed off my good bacteria with antibiotics and sent my tank into a new cycle after my red and pineapple swordtails just had fry. So that meant twice a day or more water changes to keep the nitrites and ammonia at the lowest level. For six weeks I did this tiresome chore much to the wonderment of family and construction workers who were redoing a bathroom during that time. Every time they were there I was doing the fish tank. The outcome is it finally finished cycling, I lost the fish I treated with antibiotics anyway, and the uneaten fry grew up and are beautiful in spite of the cycle they were put through.

I'm having plant problems in another tank so I got done with one frustration and onto another. I still love the hobby and can't wait to get more tanks. We're turning a large kind of unused room in our house into a new kitchen, and the old kitchen is going to be turned into a serene room with many fish tanks. Don't give up. The rewards are great.

I look at these kinds of situations as challenges, as well. It comes with the territory.

Erin, hang in there. I had a 20G that I just couldn't seem to get right. Fish would die and I'd be taking better care of it than the 55 that had no problems. It's part of the hobby, I guess.
However, if you do decide to quit, please PM me and I'll e-mail you the address where you can send all your tanks and equipment.
