not sure how you can judge a AC vs other canisters.... in almost all cases canisters are better. ac vs the other hobs i run only ac hobs. best for easy of use and being work horses.

how are canisters better than hob's (or vs. ac's)

im a penguin fan myself. i had an aquaclear 50 but it sucked. lots of water bypass above the filter basket even after new sponges, weak flow, and the filter itself never really cleaned the water. the penguin 200 i had ahs the same flow rate but is easy to maintain, cleans the water good, and has no bypass of the blue sponge. it works for me.
Canisters are better in many ways,
They can go long periods between maintenance
They can hold more media
They produce less agitation which I need because I inject co2
Intakes and spraybars are more attractive easier to hide
You can add inline units such as heaters,Uv sterilizers,Co2 reactors
The list goes on...
its just like a poll for what kind of media in a filter it really depends.
like mott said.... more media area with more media options.
also dont forget sumps as well.
