Accidental Flourish Excel overdose...aftermath...what did it do?

All the cories are still alive and recovering in a different tank. One poor girl barely has any tail left after being picked on by the platies, but she wiggles around to eat just fine. I believe it will grow back. The fin troubles are of course due to the platies and not the Excel. The cories are still doing some flashing against rocks and so forth which tells me there are some gill issues. Whether from the Excel or an ammonia spike I may never know since I changed the water before doing any testing (and parameters are stable since).

The overdosed tank appears okay now, the platies and plants are fine. I plan to move 3 of the cories back to their home Wednesday morning since I will be home all day to observe them. The other 3 are fin-damaged and will be in recovery for a bit longer.

I have overdosed Excel twice the recommended amount daily in the past in my puffer and oto tank and those fish did just fine (and I would have assumed scaleless puffers would be far more sensitive to an overdose). After this experience, however, I will be very careful about future use of this product, especially where corydoras are involved.

On a side note, my 3 peppered cories seem to be enjoying the company of the bronze crew. I haven't seen them swim around this much in a long time! I'll have to see about picking them up some permanent company, maybe 3 of another spotted species since I haven't been able to find more peppered.

sodalis! haha I love this species, and really was hurt when I lost them all. I find it odd that scaleless fish don't seem bothered by it. I think some good research is in order by somebody *cough seachem cough* being that an overdose of excel is a well accpeted way to rid yourself of bba, and cories being one of the most popular freshwater aquarium species.

I know this is true under medications so I would assume it would be the same for excel.

I think some time back, Seachem UNOFFICIALLY stated that a biproduct of Excel is killing off certain types of algae. This is because it is of the same family or relation to plants like anacharis - which melt with higher levels of Excel. They cant market it this way because it is not 100% and would have many unhappy customers if they did.

I haven't seen any effect on scaleless fish like puffers, which is why it is odd that certain fish have a bad reaction to it and others don't
