If I placed a couple of bulkheads in the top of the tank would it give enough circulation on the bottom without stirring up the sand too much ( the tank is 24" deep ). I'm just looking for alternatives. Thanks
I think my ID skills are pretty good now.. they have gotten alot better in the last year. In the beginning of 2008 all I knew was "SPS" and to stay away from them because they are too hard. I didn't know all the different types of SPS corals then.. now I think I can give a pretty accurate guess on IDing most SPS corals, as well as the rest.Great photos. How's your coral ID skills?![]()
I would have to see a picture of your tank to give you a good idea how to design an over the top closed loop, I don't know how your overflow is placed now. For closed loop returns, you could go as simple as 2 bulkheads on the top back corners and have a 8" piece of PVC going down in the tank that is capped at the end. Then drill holes in the PVC so the holes are pointing slightly downwards and just in the direction you want. If you T off the closed loop return to do each corner like that it should provide really good flow. You can even put a PVC T that is threaded on one side and put in a flare nozzle or something. It is something that would require you to play with to get right... If you want to T off each side to add nozzles then just drill a few holes below it.. then add more holes if needed. It is much easier to drill more holes then to fill in once you drilled them. Hope that makes since to you.

Yup, you just pointed out the drawbacks of a CL.. the power required for the external pumps is usually quite high compared to powerheads like Koralias (although your pump is exceptionally high, I think my 1200GPH CL pump only takes up 67w).. so at that point you have to ask yourself, it the unsightly look of the powerheads in the tank worth the savings in electricity? Also, are you willing to give up a little flexibility by going with powerheads. CL you can design anyway you want to make it work perfect, powerheads you have to keep moving/tweaking to get the flow just right. I do both as I am sure you noticed, 2 koralia3s and the closed loop. My tank is mostly SPS though so the flow is required.
I am using an eheim 1262 for my return pump and a Gen-X Mak4 pump for my closed loop.
