Ace25's 75G Build Thread

I used to keep track of how much I spent on my tanks.. but in the last year I fell off the deep end making the leap to SPS corals and figured it was better not knowing. ;)

I can say I have easily spent $30,000 on the "reef" aspect of the hobby since 2001, but as far as what my current tank would cost "as is" I would guess around $7,500 at retail prices. If I were to get out of the hobby and sell it on craigslist I would only get around $2000 if I was lucky.

Could not have said it better myself. I could be looking at a 42" plasma TV with digital cable and blue ray to boot, but instead I have to spend hours tinkering and cleaning my 72" living piece of art that I could no more get a couple grand out of if I tried. Funny thing is it is very hard to put a price on hard work and dedication. Not to mention the satisfaction of knowing you are able to sustain creatures that live in near perfect conditions and succeed in fulfilling thier every need to survive.
This has been so much more than a hobby for me as it has a great learning experience which has given me much more joy than any expensive toy ever could.
 
DSR, You can get the Prostrata's from Garrett's Acropolis but I am not sure if he ships them, I can't find any shipping info on his site. I met him at a frag show. He had the best frag setup by far. Perfect 6' all starphire/rimless frag tank with a 6' Solaris I series light on it. I picked up the green prostrata and one of my personal favorite pieces, the Steve Tyree Flower Petal montipora that you can see in some of my pics. Here, I will take a new picture of it right now, it has grown a ton since I originally bought it. I paid $30 for the Prostrata and $45 for the Flower Petal.

Ya, definately doesn't behave like its similar looking cousin the Green Millipora. When I brought it home and put it in the tank I thought "crap, did I already have that coral?" because I have an ORA Nathan's Green Milli. For a while they did look very similar but then the Protrata just took off, changed colors a little, and now probably has a 10:1 growth ratio against the green milli. I have also taken 3 frags off of the Prostrata already.

One more pic for the night. Just actinics on in the picture and a tad blurry, but lights were going out so had to take it quick. This is my newest coral.

Seasons Greeting Montipora (aka Chilli Pepper Monti). Picked it up a few weeks ago when I bought my chiller.

Darnit... those pictures did not help... Now I gotta find that somewhere local. Maybe Reefbum can help me out...

As for cost/price/resale value of this hobby...
The lesson that I have learned is that it is much better to have something like this tank than to have boxes full of valuable stuff. So far I haven't spent nearly as much as some of the quotes above, but in the last month I have spent close to $1500.00. Most of which has been funded by selling off other stuff that has been sitting in boxes for years. Now each night when I come home I check out my tanks and see how they are doing... do tests,e tc. Talk with my kids about what is going on in the water and why etc. In short, I have been paid back in spades by just my little nano... hahaha.

Ace, i have added those two corals to my must have list. In fact, they may even come in before my beloved clam...
 
LOL, good luck. Do a google search of "Steve Tyree Flower Petal Montipora" or "Steve Tyree Seasons Greetings montipora". The seasons greetings I have, I bought from a local reefer getting out of the hobby for $50, but if you look online, for the size of the one I have it would easily fetch $100-$150. The flower petal monti I believe goes for about the same. I have something about getting as many rare of corals as I can, although that Prostrata doesn't fall into that category.
