you need to clean once a week to kill the pods on it or they will just eat your screen clean in spots making it less effective and not giving you a chance to export those nutrients the screen captured out of the system.
Here is a "Day 3" shot.. got some nice stuff on the screen already and it isn't even 72 hours old yet. Seems to be on its way to working well from what I am seeing so far.
you can dip it in freshwater to kill the pods on it, but leave the algae growth you have for now to help build more.
The purpose of cleaning it every week is if you go much beyond that the zillions of little spec pods will start eating holes in your algae which isn't helping anything. and then those pods end up back in the tanka dn you havn't exported any of the nutrients out of the tank, plus it won't be as efficient without the algae they ate off of the screen.
LOL.. believe me.. I don't have a problem with pods in my tank.. and any pod explosion would be a good one. I have too many pod eating wrasses to be able to sustain pods. It is going to take a long time before that becomes a problem with my screens I think.
These arent those kind of pods. I don't know where they come from, but I have millions. And when I say millions I don't think i'm exagerating. These things are very very very small like dust.
That being said it took probably 6 or so weeks maybe a little longer before I started noticing them in my DT. So maybe its not important right off the bat. Just going by what SM says.
