I purchased a sheet of clear acrilic for making a DIY filter. The part I am using the acrilic for is the overflow. The qustion is should I have saved the extra dollars or should I had purchased plexieglass instead. The price difference was actualy prety drastic. If its not a good idea I will keep this sheet for something else and buy the plexi. I only plan on this holding around 1/4 of a gal. if that.

Acrilic VS. Plexi what do you think?

just get plexi.

Acrilic just looks better.

Since its gonna be a overflow, i dont see why you would need acrilic. Most of the overflows i see are made of plexi anyways.

Acrilic is cheaper where I got it that is why I purchased it. But if plexi is recomended I will spend the extra for it :(

NO WAY. acrylic costs a lot more that plexi. plexiglass is no way better than acrylic.

just keep the acrylic, you should be lucky that you have it.

It was cheaper at the place I went. I should mention that it was onsale though. I think I might buy them out today.

well consider yourself lucky.

the acrylic i use to build my tanks is $8-12/ sq. foot.

sorry to barge into your thread. Im looking at building a tank. What are the differences between plexi, lexan, and arcylic? i talked to a guy on the phone today and he was reading the prices and other than thickness he didnt metion the differences. Also any specs on building. Thanks

correct me if im wrong, but acrylic and plexiglas are both the same thing, just different trade names.

Lexan is similar to acrylic but is a lot stronger, almost bullet resistant depending on thickness. how big of an aquarium are you building?

I'm pretty sure acrylic and plexi are the exact same thing.

EDIT: Yep, I looked it up. Plexiglass is just a brand name of acrylic material. So they are indeed the exact same thing.

From Wikipedia:

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or poly (methyl 2-methylpropenoate) is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. This thermoplastic and transparent plastic is sold by the tradenames Plexiglas, Perspex, Plazcryl, Acrylite, Acrylplast, Altuglas, and Lucite and is commonly called acrylic glass or simply acrylic.
