Acrylic Vs. Glass Aquariums

LOL!!!!! That made my day.....sorry, but that's not right. I want to see glass that will bow like that (not preformed).

Weight does NOT matter unless you're moving it. I cannot see how anyone can even consider the weight of any tank (tank only) to be a factor.
It makes no sense (unless you're moving it, of course)!

You are wrong, glass tanks do bow if it's not made with thick enough glass just like acrylic tanks, especially for taller tanks.

And weight is a significant factor to consider for larger tanks, to give you some idea a 300 gallon glass tank weighs 1000 lbs EMPTY due to the thick glass needed for support, while an empty 300 gallon acrylic weighs at 500 lbs max.

But even not considering those factors, the safety(almost unbreakable by normal usage) and clarity of acrylic tanks alone are worth it.

Only reason to get glass is because it's cheaper.

OK, maybe the glass will bow.....however, I still disagree on weight. I said it doesnt matter unless you're moving it. Once it is in place, it makes no difference at all. If 500 pounds will make the difference between the tank falling through the floor or breaking the stand, I dont even want to be near it.

Acrylic is nice for moving, but that's about it IMO.

The silly old fart part is...I have now spent close to $500 as a result of a $5 birthday gift. Do I have a prayer in the world? :dive2:

None ;o) I've had aquariums off and on since I was a kid, and every few years the bug bites, and the aquarium I've basically ignored for the past 3 years gets a plant/fish overhaul and I spend all my time on these forums ;o)
