Add Betta to 10g tank

I have a 10 gallon tank with 5 neon tetras and 3 siver hatchet tetras. I want some color in my tank. Can I add a betta in there? If so, should it be female or male? Also I know that most stores sell male bettas - but where can you find a female betta?

If I can't add this because of crowding, what fish is a good addtion with a little color?

Any help will be appreciated.

You could put in a male betta or 3 females. They are usually found in the regular tropical tanks.

If you add a male, be aware that sometimes tetras will nip their fins. Personally I'd go for the three females, males are showy but the females are pretty little sweethearts.

There is always a lot of controversy over putting male bettas in community tanks. But it should be alright. I really don't see the timid little neons causing a problem for the betta, as he will generally keep out of their way.(it has always worked for me) You may be better off to use females. They are becoming more readily avalible in the past couple years. Some can have colors equally as bright as males(through selective breeding) but just have shorter fins. The one problem I would have with keeping a betta in your tank is they preffer to be in quite, calm and peaceful water. But the neons will cause a lot of disruption. I would reconsider with maybe another fish besides a betta.

My betta always got along well with the neons, the only time I had trouble was during feeding when the neons outcompetes the betta. On occasion it'll nip the betta during feeding.

Yeah, you could put him in there i'd say, just dont add any fish with long flowing fins simliar to a betta.

I made the mistake of adding a betta to my 20g witha guppy who had a long yellow tail, the betta tore that thing up pretty good. its healing though since the betta stopped.

My neons were always to busy fighting amongst themselves to bother anyone else .
