I recently bought some crypts from a petsmart in my area, two potted lucens and two potted red wenitti. I removed the plastic pots and rockwool, treated them in a little container with water/bleach solution for a minute or two, took them out and rinsed, and spread them out in the substrate so they will add more ground cover.
About a week later, and they're doing okay so far, a little melting from the move, but they should recover. I'm anxious to see how everything will grow in, but that will require months of waiting on my part.
Keeping the tank planted has resolve many problems I had before, mainly high nitrates. Now every time I test, nitrates usually read 10ppm, where as they used to get as high as 40ppm. I should be switching to a. eheim canister filter within the next months, to cut down on surface disturbance and maximize filtration altogether.
I also recently added ten white clouds to my system, I ended up cutting off their QT period because I couldn't stabilize the small tank's parameters, and didn't want to further the risk of losing any fish. I know this is bad on my part, but when I read the test strip on that tank, there was no where else to put them. I'll just keep careful watch of the new fish. They are schooling beuatifully, which is what I wanted for my tank. The danios remain at 6 for now, but I would like to add to that school some time in the future.
Haven't found any backdrop plants yet, but I'm waiting to see if the red wenditti won't do something to compensate for it. Any thoughts? ~Angela
