I have almost everything ready to setup my tank, with special thanks to all of you for your advice.
I have decided to start it off with sand (some live), dead hawaiin rock( 50 lbs.) for the cycle period. Once this has finished I will be adding live rock in small amounts(atop the dead) until I reach the desired goal. I do know that this will spawn mini cycles and am prepared to tend to that. I would like to put in a few detrivores(crabs) 5-10 at a time, time spaced of coarse, to help maintain algae.
My question is, is it ok to run the tank like this with adding live rock and detrivores in small amounts over time with the mini cycles without any fish until I complete this process?

It is very acceptable. Once the intial cycle is done; with 50 pounds of base rock, adding detrivores, clean up crews and LR will not cause a problem. The only one you have to add slowly is the live rock. You will be able to add all the detrivores at one time.
