Adding new plants

I just added a bunch of new plants to my 20gal tank. I actually orded them online at azgardens.com which had a nice "easy habitat" package that were a bunch of low light, low maintence plants. They came shipped in good shape as expected but now after about 2 days planted in my tank, a lot of them seem to be turning a yellow-ish brown at the tips, some even disintegrating!

Is something like this normal? Did they suffer some sort of shock? Can they pull out of it?

This is what the package contained:

1 Anacharis
2 Blood Stargrass
3 Japanese Fans
1 Dwarf Lily Plant
4 Dwarf Onions
1 Ambulia
10 Tall Sagittaria subulata
1 small red-spot Ozelot sword
8 Crypt Walkeri
3 Java Ferns

Some plants tend to just melt and grow new leaves. I ordered crypts before and they literally just broke down and melted into nothing but roots. I transfered it to a tank with lots of light and now growing back. Some plants just don't handle changes much so if you give it time, it will adapt and grow back.

Crypts' leaves tend to melt off when added to a different tank or the roots are moved, don't worry, they'll grow back. What lighting/co2/ferts do you have/use on the tank? Also what livestock do you have in there?

SK's questions are critical to helping.

I am also familiar that Sagittaria subulata will melt down and then begin growing again.

If the Anacharis and the Java Ferns are melting down something is bad wrong.

Hopefully you have put dechlorinate in the water which you put in the tank.

Are you dosing with ferts and if so what type?

What is your filtration equipment?

I just have the basic lighting. I have an aqua-glo 15 watt light that's supposedly helps aquatic plant growth, made for planted aquariums. I think the kelvin rating was 18,000? I just began using ferts. They gave me these Co2 tabs I'm supposed to put in every week that I got with the plants but just yesterday I bought a liquid fert called FloroPride from Tetra. What's supposedly better?

I know my watts per gallon is low but that's why I bought these plants so I wouldn't have to upgrade to better lighting. I wouldn't mind just buying the bulb, but only 18" 15 watt bulbs will fit in the hood I currently own.

No, I think you're right. It's all the Sagittaria that are doing this, along with the Crypts. The Java Ferns, and one Anarcharis look to be fine for now. The filtration system I got I am sure is adequate enough. It's an Aqua-Clear 70 which I have for a 20gal tank. It works like a charm!

hmm, sounds like you have very low lighting, less than 1 watt per gallon. the java fern might be alright in that lighting but you may want to upgrade lighting if you want the others to grow. saggitaria require medium lighting. here's a site that i use a lot for plant info including lighting:

http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php

they also have a search feature if you wanna look up any other plants.

So if I decided to upgrade my lighting situation (I currently only have one 18inch, 15watt Aqua-Glo bulb which supposedly helps plant growth), what's the best way about doing it? Just buy a complete new fixture? I've noticed as I've looked around stores, online, etc. that there isn't anything higher for an 18 inch flourescent than a 15 watt bulb. I hope was hoping I could just upgrade that in replacing the bulb but that doesn't look like an option for me. What's another cheap effect way of upgrading lighting?

i think you should throw the whole **** tank away and buy a house in the mountains some where and not bother any body......but thats just my thought.

Is this a 20 gallon tall aquarium? What brand is the light fixture? Maybe you could just put another on if it will fit and you can still access the tank without undue hassle.
