I just replaced my crushed coral with live sand over the weekend and the sand storm only lasted a few hours. I turned off my power head for an hour while it settled. By the that night it began to clear and the next morning was clear.
Though I was wondering.....Do I still clean the sand with the vacuum like I would my freshwater tank, or should I just skim the top of the sand. In other words...Do I push the vac down into the sand? Will I lose any sand?
in Hawaii i cannot order things like live sand or live rock... and all the lfs has is crushed coral. If i wanted to switch to sand i would have to either take from the beach or buy from somewhere like home depot... any suggestions? i am thinking about switching over. is it safe to take from the beach? is it clean?
Personaly, i would not take it from the beach as you have no idea of what pollutants have been through it, or held in it. Order aragonite online from home depot, its great sand and looks very natural..
Some people have used play sand or even pool filter sand in their tanks. The concern here would be silicates, but at least those are cheaper alternatives for you.
