Adding salt to FW tanks as part of routine

I've tried it a few times and is there any benefit? I'm not sure, none that I could see though.

The one thing I did notice was a nasty looking kinda brown crust all over the edges of my tank and lids, I'm guessing it's from the water evaporating and leaving the salt behind.

I stopped putting it in.

Good to know. Should I not consider getting fish there? I have a really nice LFS, but I can imagine situations where I might want to get a fish or two online.
I would look other places, forums are a good place to start...aquabid is like the ebay of aquariums, great deals but risky, so definitely look into the sellers' feedback. Lots of quality vendors out there too. Two good places to start are Mg (bobstropicalplants.com) and Rachel/Msjinxd (msjinxd.com) as they are both long time AC members who have branched out and have great stock IME!

My tanks are thriving without the use of salt. It simply isn't necessary.

Well now that's just common sense.

:)

There are a lot of things to this hobby that people do or refuse to do that are common sense. Simply asking on a forum like you did here usually helps clear things up. That doesn't mean you have to accept it. They are your fish and your money at stake. I realize you were likely being sarcastic, but it might surprise you how many take incorrect and senseless information as the gospel truth. We try to give the best information available though we do make mistakes sometimes.
