Adding salt to my tank...

Hi-:help:
When I was at the Pet store I was asking about adding salt to my tank. The guy said that it should be fine to do so and actually benificial. I have also found a bumble bee goby fish I really like that is sugg to be in brackish water... so my ? is can or should I add salt. I don't want to hurt the fish I have and am OK with not adding a fish that doesn't fit my tank. It can be so confusing finding contradicting info on the web!:confused:

a brackish water isnt made by just tossing fire into a tank. first of all most local fish stores or chain stores dont know what they are doing. the salt which i think they were talking about was Aquarium Salt. that should only be used as a treatment not always used.

as for the brackish tank is used by adding salt water mix. something like this.

they should be kept in BW and shouldnt be added to your fresh water tank.
 
no need to add aquarium salt to your tank unless you are treating for an illness such as ich. in fact, prolonged use of salt in fw can damage your loaches, who are particularly sensitive to it. salt works by irritating the fish, causing it to overproduce the slime coat. a healthy slime coat is good, but irritating the fish to acheive it is bad.

the gobies are brackish, which means that they should have salt, but they need marine salt that you would use in a real saltwater tank. brackish is a mix of saltwater and freshwater, like you would find where a river meets the ocean. regular aquarium salts are not the same thing as they lack all the trace minerals and other necessary things that are found in the seawater mixes.
 
I visit a local fish only store about once a month with a very knowlagable staff. I was told adding aquarium salt helps gill function by adding electrlytes to the water similar to that of Gatorade for humans. What is your opionion on that?
