I agree you are way overstocked. Why not pick up a 10g, they cost less than $10 where I live, throw in some gravel, and a cornerbox filter, (or your old filter) and you are all set. No heater is needed for the guppy, molly and platy.

But first - if you get a new filter, run it for two weeks in the 5g, without changing the filter media. This way beneficial bacteria will colonize the new filter. Add the new filter to the 10g, and it will be instantly cycled.

If you have lighting, add some watersprite (floating plant) and java moss, and you'll have a nice tank!
