Advantage of adding salt?

I'm not an American....
don't ever assume that of someone.

but I'll compare this pickling effect to...hmmm...pollutants in the air:
All these cars and factories and other machines are polluting the air, right? At the moment, there's not enough to kill us...quickly. But does that mean it's not harming us at all?
What I'm getting from you seems to state you must go to such a huge extreme - such as pickling our tanks - to get the desired effect of killing off pathogens. They add such levels of salt to ensure nothing survives in there, not because such a high level is necessary.
And please explain, what are the cons of low levels of salt? In your experience, of course...

No, what I'm saying is that the levels of salt used in tanks has no measurable effect on pathogenic bacteria.

The cons are as I said. Osmotic stress through changing the osmotic potential difference between the fish's internal fluids and the water.

I am one that is not for Adding Salt to my water. If you are having problems with your fish, then do Regular water changes. If you are doing atleast weekly water changes and still think you are having problems, then do it twice a week. I am not gonna go indepth about salt in the water since many here have already done so. Here is an article from Dr. Ted Colletti from AMA.
