Advice needed on fancy goldfish size <3

If you're looking at a potentially 8-10" (and very round) fish, I would want to keep it in something larger than a 30gal. JMHO.

As long as the goldfish have room to be away from others in the tank and the water/filtration is keep up, I don't have any problem with more goldfish in a tank than might be recommended. Remember that most recommendations are intended for the AVERAGE keeper. Most of us here are NOT your average keeper. ;-)

A group I have waiting for me to clean a 200L tank.
I've currently got 3 ryukins and 2 fantails and a pearlscale (each about 2" minus fins) in a 100L planted tank. Feeding lightly, one good mouthful each morning and afternoon, I'm running a 50% water change every 4-5 days for nitrAtes. This might give you an idea of the type of bio-load these hoodlums can generate. Oh, and they eat my plants.

We can do a good job of scaring you about their rate of growth. We're just trying to make sure you have a good idea how large these guys can get. They won't grow overnight, but suddenly 2-3 months later you'll notice there much larger than when you got them.

If you can find a 80L long or a 100L I would guess that would do to hold them for awhile until you can mount a search for a larger tank.

John.

i dont see why 30gallon long would be ok for just 1, i have 2 fancies in my 30long,and they are growing well, they are overfiltered and have weekly 60-70% water changes, but are happy and healthy.
if you read my post. you will see, that mine were about 4 inches and the waste was way too much for a 30l at their size and i had a mag 350 and a 30-60 hob filter also,.. but still wasn't good enough

I have 4 in a 75 gallon, the biggest of which is about 6 inches (softball sized). It takes 120% change every week to keep the nitrates below 20, and that's with an xp2, xp3, fluval 4, and sponge filters.

Inka,
Wow! You must have nearly 7-8 liters of media space for that tank! I thought I had one of my 55g over filtered with two xp3s (total 4 trays packed full of seachem matrix).

LOL John. Probably close. I've got 2 liters of ehfisubstrat, a bunch of filter foam, polishing pads, and crushed coral in mine. The fluval 4 is an internal, and is basically only there to push water around, or use as a venturi during the warmer months.

well just in my experience, my goldies do not produce that much waste, they have live plants they snack on as and when they please, and get fed small amounts twice a day, if my nitrates hit 20 i do a water chnage of around the 70% mark, sometimes more sometimes less, with a very vigorous gravel vac. if i come across a bigger tank for my other goldies in my 50 then the 2 will swap into that instead of the 30 they are in, but i dont have much cash so i doubt itl happen any time soon.

My fish are well fed, so frequent and large water changes are a necessity.

I can't imagine a common goldfish being particularly healthy or happy in a 2 gallon bowl...as they get up to 10-12" with proper care and accommodations. If it is not growing, its stunted and unhealthy, so I wouldn't use that as a baseline for comparison.

common/comet goldfish get MUCH larger than 10-12 even though petco sticker say 10-12 max. 18+ is more like it. Flaringshutter's largest goldfish is a common and she is 16 or so inches and still growing. and the record for a fancy is a oranda named bruce, he was larger than 15" before he died.
look at this photo of bruce and he is only 2 years old.

IMO, 30G is for one goldfish and 15-20 for each after that.
