Hi All
I'm from the UK, and new to all this.
Is it ok to have an under gravel filter and an external filter system in the same tank. We have an 84 gallon tank?

The more the merrier. Unless the filtration is causing to much current in your tank i dont think there's such a thing as too much filtration.

Right-O Kabong.

It appears that most people suggest ten times the gallons per hour of the filter to the gallons of the tank. For example, I just put a 300 gallon per hour filter (AC 300) on my 30 gallon tank.

You can do more but like Kabong said, there's no need to create a whirlpool that whips your fish around like they are caught in a tornado

I'm a great believer in over-filtration. I think it's a good idea to use an external filter if you're using a UGF - it allows you to use more specialized media like carbon, fine floss, etc. if needed, as well as providing a safety net - if you're using two filters and one fails, your fish are still okay.
