Advice Please

Invest in a good sales course for your employees. This will teach them basics on what to say to prospects (and what not), when to ask questions and when to listen.
I would say there is a HUGE lack of sales ability in your basic fish store. For the most part all the stores in my area have employees with very little sales ability. Technical knowlwdge...questionable. The ability to impart all the information I need to start a successful tank..NIL. For your employees to be succesful (and your store) it is critical they can sell. It sounds basic but think about that in context of the sales people you have delt with latley for any item. Be it HD or your lfs.

  • Don't carry dyed fish
  • Use labels or small signs rather than using that erasable pen on the glass for writing spiecies, pricing ect.
  • I REALLY like the computer thing where u can look up fish profiles
  • keep the fish healthy- dont cram too many fish in one tank- do everything the opposite as Walmart's fish department

just reading back on this subject to see what else was written and I thought about another thing or two. You might want to keep a list of websites available to the people to recommend for investigative purposes. Example "I'm looking into raising rams, any ideas?". you tell them what you can and recommend going to somewhere like www.apistogramma.com , www.cichlidforums.com, etc. etc. This way they can verify their own info and maybe get more personal information without you or your employees having to know every little detail and possibly handing out some misinformation. Having an internet connection on a computer might also be a descent idea but not sure how much that would be abused or if the store was very busy might be taken up most of the time. Just an idea or two. kyle
