I am running a 55g and I've never used a sump. I know I know, kinda dumb. But I have no idea going about in building a good sump system. I guess what I'm asking is what do I put in the sump besides obviousally SW.

And I'm still very new so dont laugh when I ask what is the main purpose of a sump anyways? If you have a filter then why is it good to have a sump? I've talking to alot of aquarists you are very knowlagable and advise me to do some sort of sump and claim it will improve the overall water quailty.

I have no idea but builing a sump sounds fun anways so I'm ready for a new challenge.

Please advise me.

Wait a minute .. why is that dumb? If you have live rock and a DSB, isn't that your filter? That's what I've been reading over the past 2 weeks.

I'm probably more new than you to this hobby and from what I read a sump isn't necessary with the above mentioned things.

A sump will allow you to do several things.

1. It will increase your water volume.
2. It will allow you to put equipment such as heaters, skimmers, water top-off devices in your stand and out of site.
