so malawis dont do any better with malawi lake salt added than malawis kept in unaltered tapwater?
that's not what i said. let me try again ... what i said was if your water is already hard and alkaline, then you don't need to add any salt to your water. if on the other hand your water is 'soft', i.e absent of appreciable levels of Ca and Mg and thus also low in CO3, then adding Rift Lake salts is a good idea.

Well I added a bit of Epson Salt to the tank- the results were almost instantaneous with regards to raising the GH a bit.
well naturally, ... Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate. so the Mg would elevate your gH but have no effect on your kH. as i said above ... if you have "soft" water which is absent of calcium, magnesium and carbonate, then adding some 'salts' to your water is a good thing for Malawi cichlids.
