To reduce aggression and to get the Africans out swimming in the open more you need to overcrowd them a little bit. Otherwise when they reach maturity, you will find the dominant male killing of tankmates...especially if there are females present.
I know from personal experience. I had 6 in a 55 gallon and they did fine until the dominant male reached adulthood. Then he killed off 2 of the subordinate males in 2 days. When I added 8 to the 4 remaining fish, the aggression was dispersed better and there have been no more casualties.
