African Cichlids in a 30 gallon tank

A 30 long is a fair size for some Tanganykian shelldwellers on one end, and a pair of Julidiochromis transcriptus on the other. That size tank is too small for Malawi cichlids; simply not enough space to stock a sufficient number of mbuna, and too small for Hap's or peacocks.
If you want the colorful Malawi cichlids a 75 is a good starting point.

I would say that a pair of Calvus could be successfully raised and spawned in a 30 gallon.

There are a few Mbuna species that remain smaller, Pittbull knows of several of them. It would be a 1m 3f ratio and the tank would be cramped because structure is must in Mnuba tanks. You could not keep adequate numbers to have a community tank of Mbuna.

You could do a variety of Tangs in this size, though as has been suggested it would be better used as a species tank ( Calvus, Cylindricus, N. Mustax should all do well as single pairs.
If you want a community, many of the shelldwellers would work, and Julidichromis Transcriptus would make a good tankmate.

Old Old post.. wow i think i see cobb webs on this post heheehe yeah so i will throw my 2 cents in at any rate aye.

30gal long would sufficiently house a four some of P. Saulosi 1M/3F for a Mbuna setup..

Tangs rule..

I have to say again, that I have seen a 30gal that was working nicely as a colony tank; stocking 12 Pseudotropheus saulosi (3 males and 9 females). This is a dwarf mbuna species with beautiful blue and black males and nice bright yellow females. Of course, a lot of rockwork is a most.

Lol!!! What the heck I'm doing in this very old post! :silly:

hehehe i think charlie is very new and didnt realize on the very old posts i see where coler shut down some of the threads that were beeing post by him/her, but at any rate i am with you Saulosi rule and i talked to eddie this past sunday and i am going to get 6 Saulosi for my 20gal long we will see aye..
