African Clawed Frog unable to use rear legs.

I read somewhere that ACFs also have heart attacks. Couldn't that seizure be one?

I had an ACF that had some sort of seizure before. He died shortly after that.

Thanks all...

I spoke to a vet that seems to think it was a stroke. Whether it was brought on by his escape the week prior I don't know. He wanted me to dissect him and see if there was anything abnormal internally but Ummm no thanks... couldn't do it.

Ya, this is what http://clawedfrogs.tripod.com/id20.html says about that illness:

Heart Attack: This may cause death, although if it doesn't symptoms will include - Lethargic behaviour, Not eating, Paler than usual skin, strange swimming stroke. Heart Attacks can be caused if the water is too warm, their heart rate is affected by their external surroundings. If it is cold then their heart rate will be slow, if it is hot their heart rate will be fast, if it's too hot the heart may not be able to take the strain

Stroke: This is when blood flow to the brain is decreased due to a blocked vessel or burst small vessel. Symptoms of this may include Lethargic behaviour, not eating, unable to move back or front legs/arms, continuous trembling of a limb or unable to regulate balance in the water. Strokes can caused by stress caused by handling or movement of the tank, they can also be caused by feeding too much fatty foods like bacon fat etc., and temperature fluctuations can also be a cause.

Sorry. So sad.

The same thing is now happening to the female! WTF!:wall: Only this time I saw it happen.

I opened the tank to feed as usual. She knows that as soon as the lid opens food is coming. I dropped in a sinking tablet. She lunged for it and her entire body stiffened for about 5 seconds then she clentched tight into a ball and started convulsing. Now she is able to use her front legs... that's it.

I've tested the water and everything is fine.. same as usual. No ammo, No Nitrite, Nitrate under 20ppm. My PH is 8.0.

The male had what appeared to be a stroke.. now about 12 days later the female has the same thing. Although I'm sure they were related since I bought them both at the same time almost a year ago.

This sucks... :wall:

oh my gosh im so sorry :(
the only stab in the dark i could take would be bad genetics maybe? thats so sad, im sorry.

*cries*

I'm so sorry...

Linda, a few quick questions off the top of my head. Bear with me as I'm shooting of the top and have never owned ACF's:

1) What's the temperature in your tank? How are you heating (or cooling) it?
2) What's the tank size and filtration? Does the tank have a lot of water movement or is it relatively calm?

I hate to say this but I think you should be prepared for the loss of this one as well :(
