I picked up 2 of these a few months ago. They seem to be doing fine. One of them is getting ready to molt. They are about 3 or 4 inches. I keep pretty big Clown Loaches and they haven't bothered them. At $20 each it would be an expensive meal.......

nothing special

I dont' add anything specifically for the shrimp. I have pretty high flow, quite a few plants, and enough bottom feeders to keep the particulate matter stirred pretty good. They are always fanning the water and not picking at the substrate, so I figure they're getting enough food. The person at the store said they need a mature planted tank. Mine has been running for several years.

Sounds like one of the rare times a Pet store employee that is well informed. They do indeed need a mature tank, since they eat microbes that are free floating in the water column.

I would be cautious with the loaches, not the best tank mates for any shrimp. Make sure that there are places for the shrimp to get away, particularly when they have to molt.

BTW, from your excellent pictures, it looks like you've got a pare of males.

I thought they were called vampire shrimp? or just another common name?

I know I like my bamboo shrimp.

fantastic shrimp! I am considering getting some as well. Just need to focuse on my hobby tanks as opposed to a breeding project.

Nice pictures! It's possible that the one on the right could be a female, since the front legs look a litle smaller. Another indication for distinguishing male from female is that the female vampire tends to be a bit less hairy on the underside. At least that's the case with mine.

molting

The smaller of the 2 is in the processs of molting....I think. It went into hiding about 2 days ago under some slate. It looks to be pretty inactive....moving its legs and tail in a repeating pattern. I used to have some tarantulas that acted similarly when molting. Too bad I cant get any pics....don't want to blast the flash in there.
