Hey guys,
I just got home, back to the tank my little brother/mother where keeping... The tank has NO LR, just fish... the tank water is YELLOW! i tested all params, amm 0 ite 0 n ate is around 20... Im ver confused as to why the water is yellow... Ive never seen this before... The salinity is VERY high and I can see the fish hurting... Im going to fix that tomorow as im very tired right now... What can be the cause of the yellow water though? the tank runs on a canister filter...

I just put in a frogspawn torch that I brought with me from my tank... I acclimated it and all, but as soon as I put it in teh tank, it shrunk and I beleive its dying atm...

Any ideas about the yellow water though?!!!

Put some charcoal or chemi pure in the filtration.

phosphates are also an option... that slipped my mind... I will grab some new carbon and a test kit 2morow...

pretty much for any long term on a tank with only a type of filter, will or could become an issue in just a matter of time. But also, you`re lacking a great deal on your tank info, other then your water perimeters. Also, doing the test themselves, and actually trusting them, could and can give one a false sense of security that everything is really not all good. From your statement on a canister filter, I believe that your lacking a good skimmer on your tank. The other thing be, do you do weekly water changes and of what percentage? And please list your tank size. The thing with canister filters is they for the most part give you some filtration. But also, you can with a canister filter have a good tank, only you need to shut it off when feeding and keep up with those water changes, and not too over feed as well.

What is a bit funny for me here is that in all my years in the hobby, I never had yellow or green water color in my tanks and so often im always reading on others who seem to have this same situation as yourself.

From your statement on your new frogspawn, they require a good size space for expanding themselves and I would believe that Iodine should be present as well. Also, your pH should be as well, no lower then 8.3

How often do you clean and change your canister? phosphates are also an option? I not believe that phosphates would do all of this. But also know that even in adding some carbon to your canister, it a lone will not help if your not doing all those other maintenance for your tank. I not believe however that carbon will remove phosphates, but your tank still requires it.

So please list all data about your tank, its size and type of canister, etc

Buddy

HAPPY HOLIDAYSTO ALL

Somehow the posting of this statement really makes me think that you are looking for an easy fix to your situation and not wanting to do the work required to maintain the tank. Sorry if Im wrong, if a pet of mine was in misery, I would immediately do all I could to correct the situation. Goes a long way toward why your water is yellow, take a look at your maintenance schedule.

Ok, before any action is taken, what are the exact values of what you tested? The water could be discolored for a couple of reasons. It could be the buildup of refractory organic compounds, which cause an eventual yellow discoloration, or it could be an algal bloom. The latter is usually instigated by poor conditions overall, especially with the introduction of ammonia/ammonium. It could be that there was an initial ammonia spike that was quickly utilized by the algae (algae are very efficient at this).

Thanks all for replying... I appreciate all the help and long posts.
First off, I was wrong about my salinity, it is actually at .023 right now and I plan on fixing it whithin the next month... (gradual increase)
I cleaned out the canister today, put in new carbon and new sponges... My readings are as follows:
Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 5-10
Calcium - 100-200
Alkalinity - 13
PH - 8.1
Phosphates - 0

Nothing else that i can think of testing for that might be the cause for the problem... I have an insane amount of hair algae on the fake rocks in the tank... I am thinking about bringing in lots of cleaner shrimp and a lawnmower blenny, dunno if my LFS will have some though (HORRIBLE LFS)
What does an algae bloom look like?

The LPS's are out of my tank and off to my LFS, but im not too happy about that decision.. Nothing in my hand though..

Can anyone tell me what an algae bloom looks like? and how to fix it?
