I am quite a newbie with the live plants. It's incredible what can be done to get certain plants to grow well. Anyway, I've read on here that plants produce the oxygen fish need when they are exposed to the light. What happens at night when the lights are off? Do the plants still produce oxygen throughout the night? I got a little concerned when I read this since I don't watch my fish at night and don't know if I am depriving them of oxygen at night?! I don't have any airstones or aeration in the tank as not to rid the water of precious CO2 (don't have an injector). I do have some movement on the surface of the water since I have 2 HOB aquaclear 70's.
My plants seem to be growing very nice and my fish seem very healthy but like I said, once the lights go out and I'm in bed are my fish getting enough oxygen? ammonia = 0, nitrite = 0, nitrates=10ppm. ph = 6.5

during the day when they are in the light, plants take in CO2 and put out oxygen. at night, they do the opposite. CO2 and oxygen levels in water are independant of each other. you can have high levels of both, and low levels of both. but don't worry about your fish. water can hold onto dissolved oxygen quite well and your fish shouldn't be able to use anywhere NEAR all of it overnight, neither should your plants.

Thanks! I will rest better now. I looked the other night while all the lights were off and the fish seemed very restful.
