I'm in the process of trying to decide on what to put in my empty 55g tank and I'm leaning heavily towards getting a pair of Blue Headed Tree Agamas (Acanthocercus atricollis). Does anyone have experience with this or similar species and would a 55g be ample housing for one lizard if not a pair?
Also, would it a bad idea to mix different species of Agama in a tank like this? Let's say I wanted to have the above mentioned lizard housed with a Mountain Horn Dragon(Acanthosaura sp) or a Red Headed Agama (Agama agama). Bad idea?

Thanks in advance.

Blue headed trees are nice but that tank really doesn't have the verticle space they need to thrive. If you want to stick with a 55 gallon I'd go with the equally beautiful species, the Red-headed Agama (Agama agama). You could definitely keep a pair in such a tank as they are more ground dwelling than A. atricollis. They're also commonly imported and not that expensive.

Mixing herp species is usually not a good idea and really only works when you take animals from the same areas of the world and give them lots of space in some type of biotope. But even then you can have problems with species from the same areas of the world when they are kept together. Sometimes they look at each other as compition for food and territory which can be very stressful to them. It's a tricky thing to accomplish and best left to large exhibits in places such as zoos.

Thanks, Vicious.
Yeah, I was worried that a tree dweller really wouldn't be happy in a 55G but wasn't sure if the Blue Head Agama would spend a good amount of time on the ground as it would climbing around on branches. I could always just build a vertical addition to the 55G couldn't I?
Either way, I do like the Red Headed Agama and with it being a 'rock' agama, it probably would be the best choice. Thanks for the advice. I've been researching for the past several weeks now and I'm trying to come up with a good plan.

i dont know if this would really work... but if you want the tree one, couldnt you stand the 55 on end? and have the open end on the side and create a door for it?

We lost half this thread. :( Luckily, I have most of the advice memorized.

Huh....you're right. Wonder what happened?
