I bought a bag of 6 longfinned rams at auction for 10$. They range in size from a tiny 1 inch including long fins to two and a half inchs, two are yellow and the rest are blues. I have three in a 20 qt and three in a 38qt. Well the smallest ram, a tiny yellow guy, is mean as heck. He chases the angels, the other two blues, and nips all fins. He is in the 38, which would seem to offer plenty of space as it is moderately planted, but he is terrorizing all the fish. What can I do to reduce the agression? Should I put the little meanie in a tank of his own--maybe a 2.5g I have? I thought rams weren't that agressive--can I expect this kind of stuff from the other rams? Also what can I do to help the fins recover from the nipping?

angels can be passive. I would move the terror if you can to a diff tank. or see if you can trade it in at your LFS for another like it.

I bought him at an auction, and I'd like to keep him. Could he live in a 5g by himself for a while until I can free up a 10g? He is quite small right now, but has crazy personallity.

Hi sarcare,

Some of the Cichlids I have had are peaceful giants and others are killers. I think that Cichlids just have different personalities like we do. Your Ram should be fine in the five gallon tank for a while.

38qt?? and 20qt?? kind of small ??

sorry it is a 20 gallon quarentine tank and a 38gallon quarantine tank--the angels are going to a 55g and the 38g and the rams will go in two different 20s and the 38. So they will eventually fit--but right now they are crammed. The angels in the 20g are pretty small, and it is only for a couple of weeks for quarentine. I thought it would be ok. I really am trying to do the right thing for the fish.

I see you though they were quarts--no these are tall tanks--the 38gallon is three feet long and 18 inches tall and 12 inches deep. Basically just a foot shorter then a 55g. The twenty is a high tank. I hope to get the mean little ram into a 5g by this evening. I've got to figure out what to do for lighting though, cause I want to put some plants in there.

LOL..I thought it was a typo ;)

the rams are cichlids and well..cichlids are cichlids.

being mostly bottom dwellers they strike from below.

tho my aggressive rams have learned not to mess with spawning angels..

sounds like you have a plan..

and the small angels should be fine in a 20 for quite some time
