Are you sure it's a leak from the return, aka DOWNSTREAM, side?
My point is, on the RETURN side, it's positive pressure, so a "sucking" force isn't very likely. The INTAKE, aka upstream, side of the pump experiences positive displacement, aka vacuum, or "sucking", so if there is a leak there, it would be an air leak.
Is the pump submerged in the wetdry? If, then the only place a leak could come from is the downstream side, but if it's external to the sump, I'd look at the connections between the sump and the pump.
And, in the case where it's on the return side, tighten tighten tighten is the best advice since it's so hard to know exactly which joint is leaking.
It also could be a leak inside the pump, which would suck....pardon the pun.
Obviously, check the parts you disconnected first, since that's more than likely where the leak is.
