air pump issues

when I used an airpump years ago, I had a thick piece of rubber... gosh, it was about 3/4" thick and about a little longer and wider than the pump itself, placed the pump on that behind the tank and it was pretty quiet. I would have been afraid to put it on cloth or something because of the bottom piece that breaths in for the pump... or at last I thought that's what the hole on the bottom did.... I thought it needed airflow so I was sure to see that it had it. Where I got this rubber piece is beyond me though... I am sure home depot or lowes would have it though...

I tried a couple of different air pumps before just switching to powerheads. They come with an air-hose attachment, and if you use the little end-attachment (some have a cotton-ball thingy) it really runs pretty quiet. More quiet than an air pump.

For a 5 gal. I use the aqua clear thats rated for up to 10 gal.

Try your old computer junk area. Bet there are at least 3-47 old mousepads in there. :)

(fwiw I hate air pumps more for the fact that they tend to roll over and die, or at least quit moving a useful quantity of air, frequently while still making as much noise as they ever did. WM "Aqua-Culture", <$ 10, is the best of the lot so far.)
