While I don't use airpumps in my fishtanks, they certainly have a place in my fish room. I use them for running brine shrimp hatcheries, and I have battery-operated units that could come into use during a power outage. The battery operated units also make a great portable filter when used in conjunction with a sponge filter in a 55g livewell.
Have air pumps will travel.

I don't use them b/c all of my tanks have been set up to promote sufficent gas exchange, or they have plants in them which don't require air pumps. :)

I use it because the sig. other enjoys them. you have to do what ever it takes to make them happy! also I have it right above the heater so it helps to disperce the heat a little better
