would it be necessary to have an air pump with bubble stone in a 55g with 7-9 mbuna? i have emperor 400 as filter

The air pump will help with water movement, but if you have a water pump and the reurn on the filtration will also do the job.
Over the years I have managed to acquire 5 of these things. I once used one to create a small filter in a small tank but the darn thing just made too much noise. Other than that I have never used any of them. If you have a good filter you do not need it.
Your Emperor will provide all the needed air ,,the bio-wheels do a very nice job at mixing water with air
