So I bought an Elite 801 air pump for my 10g. Dang this thing is noisy as can be. So I was going to swap it with the TopFin that I have on my 46. Went to disconnect the hose from the TopFin and the **** nipple broke off of it. :mad2:

This is the second one that has done that to me! Now there is no movement on one side of the 46 for now. Will take the Elite back tomorrow as well.

Dang I'm ticked!

funny...the loud noise is actually coming from the air stone...not the pump. I swapped stones and it is still a loud "hum". what a nightmare.

I got a Whisper 10 air pump, and it is really really quiet, unless if you put it against an emptym in which case, the whole thing hums really loud.

But I don't get why there is a Whisper 20, 30, 40 etc. air pump. Don't they do the same thing, pump air?

smaller ones pump enough air for small tank surface water agitation. the larger ones can power larger stones for larger surface agitation, thus better gas exchange.

larger ones are stronger to push air down to deeper depths of larger tanks.
that's more of a reason than simply powering stones.

that too :headbang2: speaking of that i need to get a bigger air pump for my 29. i have my old 10 gallon pump on it:headshake2:

i have two air pumps, a penn plax aquapod and a tetratec 80. the latter i have had for years and is my reserve pump. it is very strong and quite powerful, but noisy. the aquapod, bought 2 weeks ago, is nice and cheap. so far, its quiet too.

regarding the air stones and noise issue, i thought that the nosie was caused by the stone being too thick for all the air to circulate through at the rate the pump churns it out. back pressure is what i think its called. some air stones, limewood, are sorta notorious for causing more of this than others.

hmmm...if that is the case...how do you know what kind of stone to get? Right now I just have the Elite and TopFin small cylinder style ones.

My air pumps were always breaking finally I bought a Whisper 30 and it's been working great it's really quiet. It's connected to a bubble wand. I really find the wands to be neat looking and easy to place in the back under the gravel or on the lower wall. However for my bigger tank i just went with a lower powered powerhead. They last longer and don't make noise for me.
