I recently aquired a pair of juvie (1.5") albino kribensis for my 37 gallon planted tank.This thread will be a journal of my attempt at breeding them. I also have a few questions;

1. Will a BN and school of X-Ray Tetras get messed with when the Kribs breed?

2. Should I make a PVC cave for them to spawn, or will they be fine using my rock/driftwood piles as cover?

3. Will 2 10g's be enough to grow fry out to a sellable size? (The rest will go to my fry-a-lator, aka my JD)

4. Is it normal for the female to be nippy with the male at first? My male is a little longer than the female, but isn't as wide. He also lacks the purple belly of the female.

5. What size will it be ok to move the fry out of the tank? Will Hikari First Bites work for the fry, and at what point should I move onto crushed flake and then eventually onto pellets?

Thanks for the help, hopefully my Kribs will co-operate. I can get pics once my I-Pod finishes charging.

They're ignoring flakes right now, and don't seem to like my pellets either (NLS pellets, my JD loves them). What else should I try to feed them, or are they just adjusting to the tank?

I meant pair as in 2 of them, they are M/F though. I'll get some pics tonight.

I had some kribs breeding in a 20 gallon with x-ray tetras (Pristella maxillaris) a few months ago, so I can share some of what I've learned.

1. Will a BN and school of X-Ray Tetras get messed with when the Kribs breed?

It depends how complex your setup is. My tetras got really beat up at first, and I slowly added more and more stuff to the tank to diffuse the aggression. However, as the kribensis became more calmer, the tetras became a lot more aggressive and ate almost entire groups of fry as they grazed for food. If you are looking to breed, I would recommend re-homing the tetras.

2. Should I make a PVC cave for them to spawn, or will they be fine using my rock/driftwood piles as cover?

Mine like to breed in darkness. A white PVC pipe might be too dark, and I don't know what your decor looks like. I used shallow coconut tops with a notch cut into it for the female to enter and exit.

3. Will 2 10g's be enough to grow fry out to a sellable size? (The rest will go to my fry-a-lator, aka my JD)

I split my last batch of fry (born in August / September), with a little more then half (lets say 25) going into a 10 gallon tank and the rest stayed with the parents. The fry in the 10 gallon are less then half an inch long, but I've only lost 1 or 2 babies. The fry with the parents are about an inch and a half long, but only 6 are left.

A quick note, since you are working with Albinos; My kribensis are mixed (normal female, albino male), and I have NEVER had an albino fry survive in the same tank as the parents and tetras. I think the white makes them stand out more and easier for predators to pick out.

4. Is it normal for the female to be nippy with the male at first? My male is a little longer than the female, but isn't as wide. He also lacks the purple belly of the female.

My females have always been nippy and more aggressive then the males. If you are unsure about the sex, a trick I used to sex them at an early age is too look at the color on the dorsal fin. If the color extends all the way to the end, it is probably a male.

5. What size will it be ok to move the fry out of the tank? Will Hikari First Bites work for the fry, and at what point should I move onto crushed flake and then eventually onto pellets?

Can't help with this one, sorry! Good luck and post some pictures!
