algae eater advice =|

*shrug* they're your fish. They may be getting along now, but they won't in the future, especially when they are cramped for space.

Keep in mind that goldfish stunt easily if they are not given enough room. Their lifespans will be shortened considerably and they could live 20+ years if housed properly.

lol alright...ive had these fish (besides the pleco) for about 2 years now. and im pretty sure if they havent got angry at eachother yet then they wont..and i just put them in this tank last christmas. and when they outgrow it i will get them a bigger tank. but its just fine now. i have a gallon and a half for each inch of fish...i know what im doing.

lol oh boy. thats funny stuff. im not saying its a "rule" im saying thats how big my fish are. to give you an idea

How big is your pleco? Do you know how big and fast they grow?????
Please read this post on plecos.

46g is not emough room, at least not for long. My pleco is 18months old and was 16 inches at least measure. Most 46g are bow fronts with these dimensions : 36x15x20 My pleco could not turn around in a tank that size!

i know what im doing.

UMMMM..... If Roan told me the sky was green, I would get my eyes checked. She is a wealth of information and does the research to back it up. IME.

You probably have a common pleco, like the one in my avatar. They grow fast, eat alot, and poop even more. Rufus is less than 2 years old an 16+ inches. A fish that size would not be able to turn around in your tank. You really need to take him back to a lfs, or find him a new home.

As for your goldfish, the damage may have already been done. Their growth is probably stunted. If you choose to keep all 6 in a 46g tank, there is nothing we can do to stop you.

However, if you don't want to hear the answer, don't ask the question.

correct, if the goldies don't look crowded in a 46 gallon tank and there are 6 of them at least 2 years old, they are stunted. I have 2 Oranda goldies which are 1 and a half yrs old and are a little bigger than my fist, not counting the fins.....

Hmm, I know Roan will yell at me for this but I am going to post anyways :p: ... FWIW I typicaly post my own comments and results on things, I dont tell you what is right or what isnt. I have had goldfish (3 Shubunkins, 4 comets(?)-hand pciked from the 19c feeder tank), for about 3 years. For the past 2 they have been in a ~35 gallon clear tote from wa11mart.For the last 2 years the only filter I have used is a powerhead with a spong on the intake. They are around 4" not counting the tail. I change out about 1/4-1/2 of the water a month. They do fine. I have slipped up and let em go for about 3 months before and they didnt seem to care other than the water looking a little dirty. They constantly pick at the bottom (they are related to carp) and keep almost the cleanest bottom in all my tanks. I also have a couple bunches of Anacharis in there to help out. Its low lighting and no heater. I figure I have less than ~50 in the entire setup including fish. I have never killed a goldfish (indoors), and they seem to do great. Eventually I'll probably get a bigger tote or tank for em. Are they stunted? Probably, most are. Would they do better in a bigger tank? I dont know of any fish that wouldnt like a bigger tank. Then again I would like a bigger house and more property, but I currently reside in a small city lot. I complain alot more about that then my fish seem to :p:

Edit> some more info I'll mention... Goldfish are coldwater meaning they can survive under ice (within reason obviously). It has also been said at cooler temperatures (when not using a heater) they can be crowded much more. Also, cooler water contains more oxygen then would a heated tropical tank. My 'tote' is on the floor in the corner of the finished side of my basement and stays around 60* in the water roughly. The more fancier types of Goldfish are less hardy than Comets and Shubunkins though.
