hey guys. im having a bit of a problem with brown algae in my 10g tank, so im looking for some species of algae eaters that would take care of it but not grow too big for the tank. i have otto- cats in mind but are any others that be good?
Is your tank newly set up? Brown algae is a diatom that thrives is new tanks, it eats up silicates which will run out in time. It rubs off easily, so you can clean it yourself pretty easily, and just wait it out until it goes away.
do not go out and buy a pleco for algae control without finding out what you are getting first - the common ones sold cheaply at pet stores and walmart, etc. . .get 20-24 inches long. all plecos need more than just algae to eat (wafers, pellets, fresh veggies, driftwood) and they all produce large amounts of waste. you may find yourself doing more work to clean up after the fish than it would have been to just control the algae in the first place.
I'm using (red) ramshorn snails. love 'em! they keep my glass cleaner than I ever could, and my plants are also healthier than ever too since the snails keep them algae-free.
