We are realaitively new to fish...about 4 months now. Our algae eater died:( and we tried to go without one....not a good idea.

After lots of research and even more work, I have just about got our tank clear again. I bought 2 "algae eaters yesterday, although they are very strange looking. They have a wide head and upper body and their tail looks kinda like a lizards (long with no fins). They are mostly brown with some splotches of black. Actually, they are the ugliest fish I think I have ever seen.

All they do is lay on the bottom...hardly any movement and definately no sucking. Does anyone know what kind of algae eater I have? If so, what are their habits, etc.

THanks for the help! :dive2:

does it look like this?:

Maybe a farlowela or whiptail cat? Most algea eaters do their thing at night, so you may not see them at work.

:coffee: Thanks for your replies...unfortunately it doesn't look like any of these. I went back to walmart and the guy said he "thought" they were plecos. I am baffled because it doesn't look like a pleco to me:0

I guess I'll just see what happens with them.
