algae gel food mix reviews & discussion

revised instructions

Take a stab at revised instructions. What you do all think?

For Best Results:

  1. Stir or shake the powder to ensure an even distribution of ingredients.
  2. Combine 1 part mix with 4 parts lukewarm water. (You can use more water for a softer gel, less water for a firmer gel.)
  3. Stir thoroughly and check for clumps. Let sit for one minute.
  4. Set out the molds, containers, or surfaces that you want to use for the finished gel.
  5. Heat until the entire mixture is above 185°F. (Boiling works.) This is very important and the agar will not set properly if it does not all reach the required temperature.
  6. Once the mixture is thoroughly heated, pour into the containers.
  7. Allow the mixture to cool. The gel should feel rubbery when set. It will set at room temperature, but you can speed the process by putting it in the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes.

sounds much better.

i'm thinking that the fish aren't going for it because they don't recognize it. this morning, when i woke up and checked the tank, a small piece of it had broken off, so i took the end of a net handle and smushed it against the glass. the bits that broke off and floated away were immediately gobbled by the harlies. so i think i may not feed them today and see if i spy them nibbling on it.

also, i took some pictures on my cell of the massive snail pile that hadn't budged from the puck after two whole days lol i'll get them up as soon as i charge my phone =)

oh, and if i can get the ok from the hubby, i will definitely be ordering some of this. not only are the snails and kuhlis in heaven, but i imagine it'll make a MUCH better weekend/vacation feeder than those plaster blocks!!!! ^_^

Well the final review of this from is that my fish are nuts. They really did not care for the mix. Not sure if it because they are not used to having things at the bottom of the tank to eat, or if it was how I made it. The snails on the other hand really enjoyed it. I will try some again in the future.

I guess different fish really do have different tastes! I would be curious how they would react if it were attached near the top of the tank, like so:

That's just a steel jar lid stuck to the glass with a mag-float.

I've only mixed one batch up so far...the smell of nuked spinach does linger a bit. lol

I put one bit of the result into the shrimp tank...the snails loved it, the shrimp kinda picked at it on and off. While intended for the nerites in my other tank...I think my ram ate most of it.

As a side note...I accidentally left one of the stones I covered out because I fell asleep, and this stuff will apparently crack and peel from dehydration if left out too long. XD
