I have a major algae problem in my tank. Hair/thread algae is covering my moss filled driftwood. My algae eaters will not touch the stuff. I have read opinions on here that one should not use a bleach solution with driftwood as it may slowly release it when placed back in the tank. What is the correct way to kill the algae without killing my fish/plants?

How often do you do waterchanges? How much light do you have? Tank size, Ferts, CO2?

Let's try to find the root of your algae problem first.

More questions come to mind.... How long is the photoperiod? How often and how much are you feeding? If the lights are on too long or you are overfeeding, you are creating the perfect environment for algae.

Most algae problems can be combated with a very regimented cleaning schedule. The more waterchanges the better. Sometimes removal of the algae is needed also (Where applicable). I find that if I slip on maintence, algae does become a problem. But when I am vigilant with cleaning, algae doesn't stand a chance!

Flourish Excel works to defeat algae for some people. Or as an alternative, DIY CO2 may be useful to you. If the plants are given what they need to grow, they can do a better job outcompeting algae for the available nutrients.
