Algae Problem - Please Help

You'll never regret buying that. If you use hypersorb w/it it will remove nitrate right from the water. And to answer your question, it never starved my biofilter because my biological filtration always comes before the purigen. Its nice for cycling tanks so the bacteria can "eat" whatever it can, and the purigen mops up the rest. (I use a marineland Magnum 350 Deluxe canister filter.)

Havent a clue as to what redox is though...

I am impressed. I thought my tank was clear with my routine of 20% water changes every week and good filtration maintainance. I don't even see the water in my tank anymore without really paying close attention to. I must say this product really made my water sparkle in just 18 hours. I've never seen such drastic results when I changed the carbon in my filter.

I wanted to thank you guys for helping me with my tank problem. For your benefit I wanted to give you guys an update on the tank situation.

I did everything that was recommended...

- Scrubbed the tank with an algae brush
- I threw out the plants that were covered with the black algae
- I cleaned the ornamental rock
- Replaced the filters.
- Did about a 1/3rd water change
- Got new plants (Bonzai Trees which look very nice)
- Raked and cleaned the algae covered gravel. (Got most of them)
- Did the usuals after the water change (Stress Zyme, Stress Coat, Aquarium Salt)
- Decided to put a sponge (the kind you put into filters) inside the powerhead inlet to prevent any other fish from meeting their fate. (Yes, as posted above I lost my sucker fish by it unfortunately getting sucked into the inlet :( )
- Added No More Algae from Jungle
- few other things...

Here are a few pictures of the before and after...

Hopefully If I keep on top of the tank now, this wont happen again. So thank you all.

WORMS AND SNAILS?????
One thing I noticed tho... When I was changing the water I noticed that not only did I have little snails but also what looked to be some form of worms, black & red in color. What are these worms??????

I disagree with the addition of chemicals to the water but everything else sounds excellent. The sponge not only will protect your fish but within a week or so, serve as a biofilter also. The photos don't load for me though.

Thanks, this is what Ill do

- vaccuum all of the gravel
- try to clean the rock
- get all new plants (prolly fake, never had live)
- Scrub the tank with an algae sponge

Should I use any additives, algae "killers" like Algone, Algae Clear, or AlgaeFix?
:dive2: live plants are way cooler and better 4 your tank and speacially the fish!!! light must be able to generate at least 10,000 kalvin 4 plants to be successful. there will always be algae in your tank some is even healthy !you can not eliminate it all but if your water is cloudy then it's time to act! I would use ALGAEFIX OR ALGONE BOTH I AM FAMILIAR WITH!!!

Ill eventually get into the whole live plant thing... I was extremely tempted when I went to the LFS. I figured Id take it one step at a time and fix the algae issue.

Here are the pics again...

I would lessen the amount of time you put your lights on for.
Black or dark colored algae appear because of this. Have you tried bristlenoses? They seem to help quite a bit.

Well I noticed that on the bottle of "No More Algae" from Jungle it states...

"Do not use in tanks or backyard ponds with live plants, snails, or other invertebrates"

I am assuming that it's gonna kill them all (good thing I dont have live plants) which is what partly made me want to use it. I do however notice that it also says...

"Warning: This product contains a chemical know to the State of California to cause cancer."

um.......

Dont you just LOVE aquarium chemicals? Just dont overdose on it, or it wont just kill algae... Should get rid of all those pesky worms and snails. I think it contains copper, or something like that.
