Hey,

I had a thread going not too long ago about my fish flashing... Since then I treated for ich and turned up the temps, nothing happend, didnt see any white dots, nothing... The fish seem to be doing pretty well... they dont seem sick they are all really energetic. I kinda ruled ich out but still could be a possibility?

People told me it could be chlorine or ammonia...Since then I been treating the tank with Seachem PRIME and Seachem Stability. Its been a good 4 weeks since ive treated with that and they seem to still flash... The corys sometimes will go days without flashing and then sometimes when i turn the light on in the morning they will flash (the danios flash rarely but anytime, white coulds flash all the time)... Since ive treated with the seachem products there seems to be a lot less bubbles at the top of my tank. I also have live plants in my tank now for the past 3 weeks or so.

I have still not tested for ammonia..

I cant understand why they are still flashing.. I went to the walmarts the other day and half the fish were flashing. They can go days without me noticing them flashing, then all of asudden they do it like crazy.

any thoughts?

Do the cories "go for days" just after a water change?

You really should test the water. Without that knowledge, all we can do is speculate. If the fish are getting gill burn from increased levels of ammonia, that would certainly cause them to flash.

When you did the treatment for ich, did you treat for the entire recommended time, or did you stop because you didn't see any visibile ich spots?

For about 3 days the temp was up...

I havnt done a water change in a week and a half and they are still doing it now... Tommorow I am doing a water change.

3 days isn't adeqaute for treating ich. You need to test your water to rule out ammonia issues.

I went back and read your thread and don’t think it’s Ich either. However, I do think it’s a parasitic protozoan causing the gill irritation. There’s a large number of protozoa that can infest both vertebrate and invertebrate gills. Ich with sub-clinical symptoms isn’t a good diagnosis for flashing fish, IMO. If you’re not seeing white spots it most likely isn’t ich. Chilodonella, Piscinoodinium, and Trichodina are just a few examples of genera with protozoan species that attach to gills.

The salt treatment is a good first therapy, just make sure you’re using enough. If the fish still show signs of gill irritation than use one of the medications for treating exterior protozoan parasites. Formalin and Malachite green are effective. Stay away from the ones that use copper sulphate.

There are many ectoparasitic protozoa of fish that aren’t directly harmfull in small numbers. ‘Flashing’ or gill rubbing is a sign that their numbers have gotten out of hand.

There was a good amount of salt in the tank for a good 2 1/2 weeks, until I did a water change, so theres less now. I put 2 tsp per gallon...

Thanks for the post, im gunna try to get one of them products, what do you recommend most?

thanks
