I want to add more filtration to my 55G and was wondering if a pond filter rated for a small pond would be suitable? Has anybody ever tried this before? I realise my tank is probably too small for it, but just a cheaper avenue I'm trying to exploit!

It will work just fine, Corrie. Just make sure the input flow isn't too powerful that the goldfish might get sucked or fins shredded. For the output, it needs to be dispersed with a spraybar. Powerful flows can stress your fancy goldfish greatly. If they were pond types, they would not have a problem with the output flow.

The smallest I can get is 750 lph (190 gph). Is there such a thing as too much? I'm OK with making stuff to accessorise, and I'm always up for getting more plants, though I have plenty to be getting on with. Maybe if I get more filtration I will stop being so paranoid about illness and parasites!
You might be able to adjust the flow of the filter. I know on mine you can.
Mine only goes up to 60 gph, so I need all that I can get :]
Are you planning on making a filter for it?
Or are you just using it to get some flow in the tank?

No, not unless the filter makes a whirlpool effect that is detrimental to fish intolerant of powerful currents but this can be addressed by diverting the flow to hoses and then filtration boxes and spraybars.
Eventually, yes. I do have an excellent filter, but it came with the tank and the motor is failing. I think I need to find a good way of doing it aesthetically as the pump I've bought is internal, so it might take a bit of imagination on my part. The flow will also help...if I set it up right, maybe I'll be able to make it so I can take the lid off in the evenings and set the fountain up
LEDs, a few cocktails...how cultured! Only joking. Don't think my housemates would ever forgive me if I emptied my tank onto the floor.
Lupin, I have a few spare spray bars and lots of extra tubing. I also went for one wth adjustable flow. It should arrive Monday, then I'll be in business
